For the hand I decided that stick to a human styled hand. I decided on this due to the werewolf nature I've been trying to stick too. Once I decided this I began looking into the bone structure of human hands. For this I used Google image to gather a wide selection of angles and positions for the hand.
From my research I’ve found out that the human hand has a total 27 bones. I instantly decided this would be overkill if I created replicated each bone in my model. Some early attempts at creating the hand ended quite poorly as seen in the images below.
This part was suppose to be the metacarpals of the hand. I quickly decided that this was not the aesthetic of the hand that I was after. I decided to simplify the hand to lower my poly count parts that were affected: the metacarpals down to one object and the wrist to a simple hinge system that allows for the full range of movements. By doing this it also allows to me to create a simpler model for the hand.
This is the second attempt at the metacarpals. For this attempt I decided to look at some toy figures to get an idea on the shape.
These are the images I looked into for the shape and how the joints work on toy figures. From these images I tried to re-create the "blocky" shape from the first image as well as leaving areas open for the knuckle. I decided on this as I thought it helps with the human feel and that the fingers would be more suitable for the wolf nature of the mech.
For the fingers I replicated the structure of the toy hand although I only had one side connected to the previous joint to help lower the poly count.
Overall I am quite satisfied with how the hand turned out. Although in hindsight I feel that this part of the hand took a lot longer than I anticipated. This was mostly due to lacking a definitive direction for for the hand and my need of a hand that could accurately replicate human motion. I think I could of sped up this part by starting off by looking at the human anatomy similar to what I did for the body.
